How to Shop for a Sprinkler System

There are several factors that really make the difference in any sprinkler system one procures. The first is the basic design itself which includes such considerations as the type of sprinkler heads to be used, sprinkler head locations, the size of the water meter, the type of control, and the size of the pipes. The basic design must be correct.

The second factor which is very important is the quality of the sprinkler equipment and materials used which runs from poor to excellent. For example, a poorly designed or low quality sprinkler head might distribute the water in an uneven pattern, be susceptible to plugging, or require frequent replacement due to corrosion. Controllers vary in price from $50 to $300. The lower priced unit may have considerably less to offer than the higher priced one.

The third factor is the skill employed by the installation crew in assembling the complete system. It is very important to make proper joints, wire connections, and to set the heads correctly.

A fourth factor is the availability of spare parts and service when they are needed.

Sprinkler System Facts

  • Pop-up spray heads distribute water uniformly and are less affected by wind than rotor heads.
  • Plastic pipe is manufactured in 125, 160, and 200 PSI grades for sprinkler systems.
  • Proper zoning and head location of the sprinkler system is a very important factor in providing a satisfactory system from the standpoint of maintenance and coverage.
  • Sprinkler systems do not have to be turned off or drained during freezing weather if properly designed, except where an above ground vacuum breaker has to be used.
  • Shrub and pop-up spray heads require only 10 minutes to apply the same amount of water as 50 minutes time using a rotor head.
  • For many applications, trickle type sprinkler systems do the most effective job of watering. For example: raised beds, long narrow beds, gardens, and individual trees.
  • Digital type sprinkler controllers offer a wider variety of watering days, time, etc., providing more sophisticated water management and conservation.
  • Pipe installation using the vibrator plow technique does a much neater and cleaner job and does far less damage to existing trees, shrubs, and grass.

Isn't Cost the Most Important Factor?
